song 12 just done. its on myspace - but u need to turn up the volume.

song 12 just done. its on myspace - but u need to turn up the volume.she said love is a continual never ending farewell
from the first kiss
the heart still seeks to fly
from even this

he said never give your whole heart
always keep a small part ,
turn tight and twist
the world can fade and change
from kiss to kiss

some people are the picture
some people are the frame
cant have one without the other
some never hear their names called
some will stay, foever in vain
and jesus had a brother called james

he said would u mind if i went now
this isnt really me somehow
i dont do this
the snow fell soft and cold
silence its gift

some people run away
some people play the game
some people seem blessed, some always get the blame
some will stay forever the same
they say jesus had a brother called james

let me in now please my mama
i can sense u there behind the door
i just need a place to rest this winter evening
in the morning i wont trouble u anymore

and you can throw stones and you can know better
sometimes a man doesnt come up to the letter
if ive let u down, iv let u down a thousand times
dont think that i havent felt ashamed
dont u know jesus had a brother called james

she said the hearts just a muscle
the harder the struggle the stronger u will be
is there a way home now still for me?

some things they are too much
sometimes we fail
some people can standby
some people are too frail to stand all alone
and alone remain
jesus had a brother called james
and this will go onward the same
as the snow disappears in the falling rain

just havin a gig post mortem as u do -

just havin a gig post mortem as u do -first thanks to all of u who rammed the venue - adam trafalgar as i call him said it was the fullest he'd ever had that venue - people on the stairs in the aisles etc. and of course eleven of us on the stage which was cosy, but above all it happens to be a really great sounding room. itd b a great thing to have someone play there every saturday night - the only dilemna is playing too loud. so. what a priviledge to set up in more or less a circle where i could see each player and we could all follow the music wherever it went. all a bit alarming because the strings had never played with the bass and percussion... nick keyboards had never played with either sara the trumpet and mollie the bv had never met the strings and none of us had ever played with hugh the genius guitarist before. i think i said durin the evening that the whole thing had come about really because of me wanting to make something from scratch - out of thin air instead of always working on other peoples stuff. i could happily spend a lifetime listening to these musicians takes on my music which is probably first and foremost to do with the lyrics. we got a recordin and a film of the whole event. so ill stick some of that up this week. its not broadcast quality but u can listen to yerself yawning or whatever. and most of all the strings arrangements - violin viola cello really seemed to deepen the songs. my fave was probably left/right which got a bit worked up and kissin u with a gospel piano no guitar. for the first time im thinkin these songs are stronger than the last lot. so for my benefit really rather than anyone elses.. it went
surrender - everyone playin lots of stops and detail - twelve string sounding fab. id like to add a slide guitar part.... some tom toms in the jazz solo... more voices and the sound of the sea!
tall ships - tabla and shaker... the more percussion and the less drums the more the songs seem to emerge
white moon - might b room for a harmonica and a whole choir...
left right - gradually begginin to find its voice - its a funny old song - i got a recordin of a little rehearsal ill try to put up soon
wish id found u first - mollie hodge is obviously going to make us all very rich and become a mega star - just wait til u hear her songs!
power cut - always most in love with the last song u wrote
kissin u - yep, good to get rid of the guitar at last
back together again - favourite in oxford but seemed a bit boring here
dont go...is dont go
remedy - why i wrote something thats too high for me god alone knows
who killed davey moore -what a song mr dylan. just a laugh to sing the song i used to sing in every pub gig
closesty to home - why i wrote something thats too low for me god alone knows.
so whats next? watch this space. couple more songs then record em i reckon. thankyou again for coming. and thankyou for the kind comments too.

when i was living up a tree all that time ago in newbury.we used to talk all night about climate change and what we'd done to the planet

then i drifted away cos no one seemed to have a sense of humour-

after 9/11 a friend happened to say that he thought climate change was much more of a worry than any terrorism

it was a dinner party when someone said there was still no real proof for climate change, it was the ides of march, - scare mongering

mongering

i just made a piece, a modern opera, with some friends about underground rivers in london and a new monsoon season of gales and flooding coming our way. u can find it at http://www.andwhilelondonburns.com

yesterday at middday our one hundred year old one hundred foot australian eucalyptus was lifted out of the ground and cast a hundred yards further down the garden leaving a six feet crater and a new view.

i know eucalyptus are greedy for water with shallow roots and heavy oil laden limbs but even so..

why is green politics so po faced and unfunny?

better go to bed theres more gales forecast

all night the house has been out at sea

night

a little bit of wisdom..

a little bit of wisdom..every now and then on this blog ive put up a poem (well the blog that is at doug hodge.com - they seem to b morphing now) - im always reading and rereading poetry - and most of what i try to put to music doesnt seem to end up on the album although ruth - is one of my favourites from the first album... anyway ive been reading alot of brecht - i tend to think he is a greater poet than a dramatist - and so ive put one of his longer pieces below. just in case anyone had the time to read it. its just exquisite i think. i was toying around with a little country style idea for a song maybe called - jesus had a brother called james - all about how sometimes there is someone who stands in the shadows while others shine etc. and it reminded me of this poem. i dont know if itll end up as one of the songs but its all part of the process i spose.

LEGEND OF THE ORIGIN OF THE BOOK TAO-TE-CHING ON LAO-TSU'S ROAD INTO EXILE

Once he was seventy and getting brittle
Quiet retirement seemed the teacher's due.
In his country goodness had been weakening a little
And the wickedness was gaining ground anew.
So he buckled on his shoe.

And he packed up what he would be needing:
Not much. But enough to travel light.
Items like the book that he was always reading
And the pipe he used to smoke at night.
Bread as much as he thought right.

Gladly looked back at his valley, then forgot it
As he turned to take the mountain track.
And the ox was glad of the fresh grass it spotted
Munching, with the old man on its back
Happy that the pace was slack.

Four days out among the rocks, a barrier
Where a customs man made them report.
'What valuables have you to declare here?
And the boy leading the ox explained;' The old man taught'
Nothing at all, in short

Then the man, in cheerful disposition
Asked again"How did he make out pray?"
Said the boy"he learnt how quite soft water, by attrition
Over the years will grind strong rocks away
In other words, that hardness must lose the day"

Then the boy tugged at the ox to get it started
Anxious to move on, for it was late.
But as they disappeared behind a fir tree which they skirted
Something suddenly began to agitate
The man, who shouted: 'Hey, youl Wait!

'What was that you said about the water?'
Old man pauses: 'Do you want to know?'
Man replies: I'm not at all important
Who wins or loses interests me, though.
If you've found out, say so.

'Write it down. Dictate it to your boy there.
Once you've gone, who can we find out from?
There are pen and ink for your employ here
And a supper we can share; this is my home.
It's a bargain: come!'

Turning round, the old man looks in sorrow
At the man. Worn tunic. Got no shoes.
And his forehead just a single furrow.
Ah, no winner this he's talking to. [
And he softly says: 'You too?'

Snubbing of politely put suggestions
Seems to be unheard of by the old
For the old man said"Those who ask questions
Deserve answers". Then the boy"What's more its turning cold"
"Right.Then get my bed unrolled.'

Stiffly from his ox the sage dismounted.
Seven days he wrote there with his friend.
And the man brought them their meals (and all the smugglers
were astounded)
At what seemed this sudden lenient trend
And then came the end

And the boy handed over what they'd written -
Eighty-one sayings - early one day.
And they thanked the man for the alms he'd given
Went round that fir and climbed the rocky way.
Who was so polite as they?

But the honour should not be restricted
To the sage whose name is clearly writ.
For a wise man's wisdom needs to be extracted.
So the customs man deserves his bit.
It was he who called for it

i just love the simplicity of it - that everyone is needed in the full making and passing on of beauty. auf wiedersehen.x
